Case Study No. 1

Anaerobic Bioremediation and In-Situ Chemical Oxidation - Leicester

FIRST FULL SCALE COMMERCIAL USE IN UK

WINNER 2005 INNOVATION AWARD

·       Former mill / fabric mill / warehouses

·       Redevelopment for residential use  

·       Dissolved and adsorbed phase contaminants within River Terrace Gravels aquifer  

·       Plume attributed to former use and storage of fuel, oils & solvents on site  

·       Primary contaminants of concern:  

o        Tetrachloroethene (PCE)

o        Trichloroethene (TCE)

o        Dichloroethene (DCE)

o        Vinyl Chloride (VC)  

·       Site maximum concentrations:  

o        PCE: 36,000 mg/l

Remediation Method: 

In-Situ Chemical Oxidation using Fenton's Reagent and Sodium Permanganate and bioremediation by Reductive Dechlorination

·       Direct probe temporary injection points (left) through the use of a mobile tracked drilling rig and dosing unit (above)  

·       First use of Sodium Permanganate oxidation on a full scale commercial project in UK  

·       Use of biostimulating compounds to enhance reductive dechlorination of chlorinated solvent compounds under building footprints. 

Results : 

·       Rapid achievement of remediation targets  

·       Concentrations of PCE reduced by 96%, concentrations of TCE, DCE and VC reduced to below detectable limits  

·       Operational duration of 5 weeks
